The MATES Project - Managers for Sustainable Transition aims to intervene in the process of discovery and sharing, with companies and management, of opportunities related to a sustainable development paradigm.

More specifically, the project, funded by Fondirigenti and carried out by SFC - Sistemi Formativi Confindustria in partnership with Fondazione Ecosistemi and Ecole, aims to analyze the organizational structures of companies and the methods by which environmental and sustainability policies are defined and implemented within these organizations, along with the related competencies and responsibilities of individuals involved.

The objectives pursued by MATES are as follows:

1. Provide an overview that reflects the organizational structures of companies and how environmental and sustainability policies are defined and implemented within these organizations, including the relevant competencies and responsibilities of individuals involved.

2. Examine how and with which topics managerial training actors deepen and integrate managerial competencies for sustainability in their training paths.

3. Design and implement assessment systems to identify training needs within companies in terms of managerial competencies for sustainability.

4. Design training models aimed at building managerial competencies for sustainability, both in general and specific terms for various roles.

The project involves the participation of at least 300 managers from 75 companies and includes the following actions:

1. Conducting a survey on the organization of corporate sustainability.

2. Conducting a survey on managerial training paths for sustainability.

3. Designing and implementing assessment systems to identify training needs.

4. Identifying training models for managerial competencies in sustainability.

The final results will be presented in a research report that will be published and distributed to both companies and managerial training stakeholders through the use of mass media, social networks, multimedia tools, websites, events, and conferences.

The MATES EXTENDED initiative, the second edition of the project, focuses on promoting and disseminating the developed tools and identifying a path for certifying sustainability-related competencies in close connection with ongoing European initiatives.

Specifically, the initiative encompasses the following specific objectives:

1. Implement and disseminate competence assessment tools for Sustainability to guide companies in designing training programs to bridge identified gaps.

2. Define flexible training models tailored to different professional roles and adapted to the specificities of the manufacturing and service sectors.

3. Define minimum competence requirements to be acquired through training to access certification, in close alignment with EU guidelines.

The goal of this activity is to create a version 2.0 of the MATES self-assessment tool. For this purpose, an in-depth analysis and specification of the questionnaires produced during the MATES project will be conducted.

The analysis will take into account the knowledge required for the role of Sustainability Manager, which is being defined in "UNI/PdR 109.1:2021 - Unregulated Professional Activities: Professional Profiles in the Field of Sustainability - Part 1: Sustainability Manager, Sustainability Practitioner - Requirements for Knowledge, Skills, Responsibilities, and Autonomy."

Upon completing the self-assessment implementation, a dashboard will be designed for managers who have completed the questionnaire. This dashboard will allow them to assess their performance and compare it with the best and average values derived from all questionnaire responses by the manager population. A section of the dashboard will be dedicated to collecting good corporate practices in sustainability training.

The initiative, which lasts approximately 9 months, directly involves 50 managers and includes events dedicated to networking among managerial populations, promoting the exchange and dissemination of experiences.
