DIGITRONICS in Rome: mechatronics trainers' skills for digital learning

SFC Sistemi Formativi Confindustria welcomed the DIGITRONICS partnership and hosted the project's 4th Transnational Meeting. Among the items on the agenda, the partners compared their ideas to choose the approach behind two very important project products: the Mechatronics Trainers' Guidelines for Digital Training, and the related Learning Modules.

Digitronics aims to further professionalise mechatronics training courses and help teachers identify where they can further develop their digital mechatronics skills and the professional training of their students. To bridge the gaps between training and the needs of industries and sectors using mechatronics, Digitronics strives to improve the professionalisation of mechatronics training courses and to allow trainers to address future needs and explore the skills that will be increasingly needed.

Then it is clear that the ability to educate and professionalise in digital is strategic. Teaching how to govern these new tools and the new ways of working is fundamental. But how can such a complex capacity be achieved? Even the Ministry of Education in Italy states that new qualifications and new paths must be relaunched, adapting curricula to the needs of the territory, modernising laboratories and teaching. "Some realities̀ of excellence already exist. We must help the system to generalise them. Investing in technical and vocational education is a great investment for our young people and our production system."

Among these poles of excellence are, for example, the Istituti Tecnici Superiori (ITS), a novelty in Europe of which Italy is the spokesperson by proposing a model of higher technical education that differs from what is known today as the dual model in Germany, or the Istituti Tecnici in Spain. In Italy, the ITS responds to a specific level of training, consecutive to that of high schools (4 European Qualification Framework) and in line with a conceivable continuation of studies at university (6 and subsequent levels of the European Qualification Framework). It is not a waste of time, if one considers that over 95% of ITS students find a job at the end of their ITS training. But it is an enhancement of training concerning the need for new professional skills that the territory expresses.

The growing importance of ITSs and the participation of sectoral companies in defining the competences of the profiles that are highly relevant to job requirements was also corroborated by the testimony of the ITS Mechatronics of Lazio, which actively participated in the DIGITRONICS meeting in Rome, representing a clear example of the ITSs' capabilities and willingness to innovate.
