The integration of digital technology in work-based learning is rapidly becoming a critical aspect of education, particularly in Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs. Educators in this domain must equip themselves with specific competencies to effectively leverage digital tools in the learning process. The Erasmus+ project "Deal with Digital WBL" aim is to support teaching in adapting their skills, adopting strategies to the digital age and equip students to succeed in digital and hybrid environments.
The project, conducted in 5 European countries (Italy, Germany, Lithuania, Spain, and Hungary) highlights the need to prepare educators for these changes, especially considering:
- the rapid evolution of the digital landscape, coupled with a very high average age of VET educators (OCSE 2023) which could act as a deterrent to methodological change. It makes essential to bridge the digital skills gap and adapt teaching approaches accordingly.
- the extensive array of technologies that workplaces are incorporating, and how work-based learning should incorporate evidence of these technologies.
- the comprehensive discussion regarding digital skills within the learning environment, taking into account the European framework of DigComp, the Digital Action Plan, and the European digital agenda. We explored how these frameworks can align with the preparation of educators and teachers, encompassing both academic and corporate backgrounds.
The "Deal with Digital WBL" partnership recognizes the transformative potential of digitalization in learning environments. Their approach integrates digital tools to enhance Work-Based Learning (Digital WBL), emphasizing not only the substitution of existing teaching strategies but also their reevaluation and transformation to fully utilize the potential of digital tools.
To facilitate this transformation and provide a framework for educators, the Digital WBL Ambassador Programme has been established. This program encompasses training and research, guided by three fundamental principles: digital transformation, new teaching and learning concepts, and workplace learning.
Six key competencies for educators were identified, forming the basis of the overall competency framework for teachers in the context of digital Work-Based Learning. These competencies are crucial in enabling digital learning experiences for students, particularly those rooted in work-based settings and powered by digital technologies.
