BuildEnrichedSkills: An Innovative Methodology Redesigns Training for Green Building in Europe

The construction industry is undergoing a radical transformation towards sustainability and digitalization while simultaneously facing a severe shortage of skilled workforce and adequate competencies. To tackle these challenges, BuildSkills Academy, the Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) dedicated to Transitional Skills in the construction sector, has developed the Build Enriched Skills Methodology (BESM)—an innovative framework designed to enhance vocational education and training (VET) courses with essential transitional skills.
BESM is a coordinated collaborative effort among 17 European partners specializing in training and development in the construction sector, aiming to bridge the skills gap in European construction. As a partner in this initiative, Sistemi Formativi Confindustria invites you to download and review this comprehensive methodology and provide feedback to ensure it effectively meets the evolving needs of the sector.
In summary, BESM introduces a structured approach based on three key pillars:
Assessment: A self-evaluation questionnaire for VET providers to assess their current training offer against the quality principles defined by the European Commission (EQAVET).
Needs Analysis: A country-specific sectoral approach to identify skill gaps and highlight areas for improvement.
Development: Detailed guidelines and checklists to support the revision and enrichment of training courses, including best practices for both content and teaching methods.
The methodology addresses core thematic areas crucial to enhancing the quality of training in the sector, including:
The integration of cutting-edge AR/VR technologies and digital learning platforms, Problem-centered learning scenarios based on real industry challenges, Work-based learning opportunities and social innovation components, Case studies from the sector’s innovation ecosystem
A "Plan digital, build circular" approach.
Following a rigorous validation process by external evaluators, including two transnational roundtables, six country-specific working sessions, and engagement with multiple stakeholders from industrial and skill ecosystems, the methodology is now available on the project website.
BESM represents a significant step forward in standardizing and improving training in green construction across Europe.
As part of the ongoing enhancement process, we invite you to participate in reviewing the document to help:
Establish industry standards for green building skills,
Ensure training content aligns with real market needs,
Support Europe’s transition to sustainable construction,
Build a more skilled and adaptable workforce.
To facilitate the implementation of BESM, the BuildSkills Academy team is developing a digital platform that integrates all assessment tools and resources into a single, accessible hub.
