The European Commission's initiative "Union of Skills - Investing in people for a competitive European Union" highlights data showing growing difficulties for companies in accessing adequate skills systems to guide them in the innovation of production processes. 4 out of 5 SMEs cannot find the skills they need to continue innovating. This challenge, when transferred to the automotive sector where international dynamics, disruptive technological innovations, and the demands of green transition are at play, urgently calls for a rethinking of the sector's main training and skills development systems.
The Erasmus+ Blueprint project TRIREME – Digital & Green Skills Towards Future of the Mobility Ecosystem addresses this issue. After Brussels and Milan, the project held its third transnational meeting in Ostrava, hosted by VSB University. 30 partners from across Europe gathered to begin the validation phase of the skills clusters and the Skill Matrix, a strategic map of key competencies needed to address the challenges of the automotive sector and electric mobility in the coming years.
TRIREME, coordinated by ASA – Automotive Skills Alliance, aims to outline the future of mobility-related professions, starting from the real needs of businesses and anticipating market changes. To date, the TRIREME skills matrix is extensive: 29 skill clusters ranging from Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to electric vehicle maintenance, from hydrogen to additive manufacturing, and cybersecurity. 156 emerging professions have been identified as strategic to support the sector's transformation.
In the coming months, Sistemi Formativi Confindustria, a TRIREME partner, in collaboration with SPIN360 leading the updating of innovation scenarios in the sector, will propose the TRIREME workshop program. These workshops aim to involve companies, training institutions, and stakeholders in validating professional profiles and co-designing training paths focused on reskilling and upskilling the European workforce.
