Among the many opportunities that ECOMONDO offered again this year in Rimini to meet and learn more about the circular economy, from 5th to 8th November, SFC interviewed some witnesses to identify the emerging skills of industrial symbiosis processes. Many contributions emerged, which will be considered during the activities of the INSIGHT project, including Italian best practices in the European framework of competences related to Industrial Symbiosis Experts. First indications identify as elements of success:
- The cooperation between specific knowhow, such as those represented by Novamont and Fabbrica Pinze Schio, which worked respectively on the identification of an innovative and biodegradable raw material and on the development of an EN 13432 certified process for the production of compostable cutlery: in this way CEO Armido Marana presented the ECOZEMA brand;
- the ability to talk to companies that face barriers when innovating their production process and the use of regenerated resources, both in terms of regulatory constraints and certification. In order to implement possible interconnections in the territory, it is necessary to know it well, to involve stakeholders and interest representatives, to create networking opportunities with companies, also addressing the issue of waste prevention, as required by the EC. This is the testimony of Claudia Brunori, ENEA researcher and head of the USER Division for the efficient use of resources and closure of cycles;
- communicating the results of Industrial Symbiosis processes, which in the logic of the Sfridoo® start-up also means identifying operational processes of saving and profitability with respect to what is apparently worthless for companies. Marco Battaglia, CEO of the start-up, relaunches the knowledge of waste management techniques that, to date, is still not widespread in the management system of companies, especially SMEs;
- Facilitating the interpretability and applicability of regulations in certain contexts can facilitate Industrial Symbiosis, confirms Tiberio Daddi of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Institute of Management, referring to the case of the marble district in Tuscany. Trust between companies, as well as the willingness to cooperate and interact, is not always adequate to support the exchange of value between companies in the same territory. Finally, the availability of information about the type of by-product present in a territory is not always effective. It is important to identify actors able to manage this information and facilitate the start of industrial symbiosis.
The contributions collected will be part of the Italian best practices presented in the framework of the INSIGHT project, under Erasmus+ KA2. SFC is the Italian Partner that will be in charge of the definition of the Blueprint strategy on Industrial Symbiosis, with output expected in 2022.
