From the DRIVES project, emerging skills and expertise for the European automotive sector

The final event of DRIVES project was held on 24 March. The project started in 2018 and it was funded under the Erasmus+ programme. The initiative involved 24 European partners including public bodies, trade associations, vocational training schools and universities from 11 EU countries.
The aim of the event was to present the results achieved during the four years of work (2018-2022), dedicated to identifying emerging skills and professional figures in the European automotive sector as well as supporting the sector's development strategy, which is increasingly oriented towards the adoption of innovative, digital and sustainable production and management systems.
One of the guests of the event was Julie Fionda, Deputy Director of the European Commission's Skills Agenda Unit, who pointed out that "Success depends not only on sustained investment in hardware, but also on the innovative genius of our engineers, technicians, scientists and designers. Improving and enhancing skills during one's career is a cornerstone of any resilient industrial ecosystem. And moving from combustion engines to electric powertrains with batteries will require new skills and new types of work."
Project partners include Sistemi Formativi Confindustria, Sistemi all'Industria Italiana and ANFIA (Associazione Nazionale Filiera Industria Automobilistica), which helped to carry out a study to analyse the supply and demand for skills in the automotive sector. From these research, emerged the importance of investing in digitalisation to enable companies being in constant contact with the customer and, through data analysis, to adapt products and production processes in a very short time, with a potential and important competitive advantage.
The event also enabled to highlight the results of the survey concerning the most demanded professional figures in the automotive sector. Among the most demanded job profiles are: Powertrain Engineer and Automotive Technician specialised in innovation and new technologies. As a direct consequence of the importance assumed by digital skills, it is also emerging the figure of the Automotive Data Analyst for the correct interpretation of data and information. The trend towards innovation is then underlined by the figure of the Innovation Manager, transversally responsible for the change processes linked to the different company objectives, and by the profile of the Sustainability Manager, to support companies in integrating sustainability objectives into company strategy.
During the event, the numerous types of free online courses were also presented, developed and made available within the framework of the project through the DRIVES learning platform, an EU database of training courses aimed at the Automotive ecosystem, to which more than 2,700 users from 54 countries have subscribed.
The initiative also allowed to deepen the perspectives of apprenticeship in the automotive sector, addressed through a guide for "hiring an apprentice" and a collection of innovative practices relevant to automotive apprenticeship.
Finally, it was emphasised the contribution of the DRIVES project to the establishment of an automotive skills agenda, through the creation of the Automotive Skills Alliance, the network built through the project, which from now on will have the task of disseminating the results achieved by the project to the whole European automotive ecosystem.
