The team committed to "Deal with Digital Work-based Learning" met in Rome on 11thand 12th April, at the SFC premises, to discuss the work programme for the next 3 years. The aim is to achieve the digital innovation of the VET system underlying the proposal led by SFC and carried out together with 7 European partners, 4 associated partners and implemented in the framework of KA2 of the Erasmus Programme.
The key need driving the proposal for innovation is the shift towards online teaching in VET systems. The unprecedented speed-up of physical distancing during the pandemic in transferring teaching activities online required rethinking how to transfer teaching methodologies and experience-based learning models online, including: workshop-based teaching activities, work-based learning, apprenticeships, and all learning experience based on the work environment skill application.
As VET educators, coordinators and designers, we wondered:
If the working environment is not physically reachable, how can we still support practical teaching activities?
If the company employs a highly automated and digitalised work environment, what is the appropriate way to introduce students into the work-based learning process?
Can teachers' good use of technology (communication platforms, Learning Management System, in the best cases) overcome the lack of knowledge of innovative online experience-based learning methodologies?
How do we bear the costs of a digital transformation of teaching?
These were some questions the project team discussed on 11th April, sharing their experiences as a common learning resource and finalising the work plan for the coming years.
The University of Oberta (Catalonia) having its long-term experience on e-learning, will lead the partnership in systematising a framework of innovative pedagogical approaches and defining a set of best practice quality criteria for Digital WBL.
Inspired by the combination of Theory and Practice by which Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) develops its dual university pathways the partnership will support in defining the emerging Digital skills for the VET Trainer needed to innovate the Work-based Learning online methodology. The start-up DINAMO Adv has the task to outline the IT component and to guarantee the usability of the training paths for VET educators online. The CIS of Reggio Emilia will direct the piloting, also involving PANKO, while HANSE PARLAMENT will develop the Toolkit for the implementation of Digital WBL in VET training.
The working group is identifying the community of stakeholders to share, discuss, analyse and collect data supporting the deliverable production. Among the Digital WBL stakeholder map, we already include 4 excellent associated partners such as EfVET - European forum for VET and TKINICA, the EdTech agency of the Government of Catalonia. We are proud to have involved the parents of VET students at an early stage of the project, represented by two associations working at national (CGD Coordinamento Genitori Democratici) and European level (EPA - European Parents Association). In fact, for young school leavers, the choice of VET still suffers from the limitations suggested by the family, making it a second-class option, limited to those who are not 'sufficiently' attracted by traditional education. One of the impacts we would like to achieve is instead to make the VET choice more attractive to a target group of parents and students able to grasp the challenges of digitalisation in the world of work, in social life and interested in approaching it from the educational and individual growth phase.
