DIGITRONICS: Publish the guidelines for teachers in mechatronics

DIGITRONICS is the ERASMUS+ strategic partnership that includes IPRA-MEDEF, the training institute of MEDEF - Mouvement des Entreprises de France, SFC Sistemi Formativi Confindustria, the training institute of Confindustria, CIS Business School, the teacher training center of Malopolska in Poland, and the Technical Institute Narcísa Xifra i Masmitjà in Girona, Catalonia. Employer representation, ensured by MEDEF in France and Confindustria in Italy, is complemented by the professional development methodologies of the Malopolska Center and the mechatronics teaching expertise identified at the Girona Technical Institute.

Together, the partners have emphasized the multifaceted nature of mechatronics, a discipline that encompasses so many diverse areas of know-how that it gives rise to a complex demand for skills from companies looking for specialists to work in various industrial fields. In turn, it's important to convey the complexity of mechatronics to young students who should enter the industrial world immediately after leaving technical schools. In this scenario, the DIGITRONICS partnership identifies the training of trainers in the field as a strategic key to expanding the way mechatronics is taught. In fact, teachers also need to be updated with all the new technologies and new pedagogical models that can be effectively supported by the pervasive digital transformation in our era.

The DIGITRONICS Erasmus+ project offers an extremely stimulating opportunity, especially in the more advanced fields of computer science, mechanics, electronics, and robotics that make up mechatronics. Teachers, as well as students and workers, must continuously update their skills and learn not only new technologies and industries but also new business models, as well as the impact of social, ethical, and environmental implications.

Stakeholders representing various facets of the mechatronics world, from companies active in mechatronics to educational institutions, actively participated in the development of the DIGITRONICS Guidelines, aimed at identifying and suggesting new educational approaches. This is particularly important when it comes to current distance learning capabilities, which have proven to be very valuable even during the pandemic crisis when physical presence was difficult or even prevented by regulations. The possibility of conducting remote lessons and even work-based learning with teachers located hundreds of kilometers away from students has been successfully tested and demonstrated, and the Guidelines provide support for implementing such approaches.

The DIGITRONICS Guidelines are specifically aimed at teachers, who must master not only their specific subject matter but also the various methodologies, teaching approaches, and technologies available for such a demanding learning area as mechatronics.

One of the main efforts made in the development of these Guidelines was to promote and encourage the development of innovative solutions that today's mechatronics teachers must be able to identify and manage. For example, the ability to include environmental and social impacts during the product lifecycle in the teaching of specialized subjects (technical and soft skills). This aspect was emphasized in our Focus Groups as one of the emerging skills and as a highly necessary competency for training students not only to enhance our material prosperity but also to improve our social and cultural fabric.

The DIGITRONICS Partners firmly believe that the publication of the Guidelines, titled "A Guide for Educators: Innovative Online Training Based on Learning Modules (Distance Learning)," will substantially help teachers feel more confident in using new methodologies and teaching approaches through examples, best practices, checklists, references, and models.

In the coming months, the partnership is committed to conducting several pilot experiments based on the Guidelines and other DIGITRONICS outcomes to validate and adapt the approach and contribute better to the digitalization of vocational training pathways by involving a community of experts in the field of mechatronics from European companies, universities, vocational training institutes, and educational institutions.
