Managerialization of Boards of Directors: Self-assessment and new training models for managerial upskilling and reskilling

The research project promoted by Fondirigenti within the framework of Strategic Initiatives is carried out by Luiss Business School, in collaboration with Sistemi Formativi Confindustria. It aims to map skill gaps and the resulting training needs to strengthen the skills of board members, preparing them to successfully face current challenges and future geopolitical and economic changes.

4 Key Phases of the Project:

  1. Detailed Analysis of the Board of Directors: In-depth evaluation of the structural, demographic, and psychometric characteristics of the Boards of Directors of Italian companies.
  2. Assessment of Competencies and Training Needs: Detailed examination of current competencies and identification of specific training needs of managers.
  3. Self-Assessment Tool: Creation of a personalized self-assessment tool for board members.
  4. Development of an Innovative Training Model: Design of a modular training model based on the collected data and analyses to address expressed gaps and enhance necessary skills.

Impact Analysis and Expected Results:

In recent years, academic research has focused on the themes of "diversity & inclusion" within boards of directors, highlighting that those with greater heterogeneity are more effective in monitoring management and enjoy broader perspectives on business, resulting in positive effects on the financial and sustainable performance of companies. In light of this, to promote greater effectiveness of the board, the project aims to involve approximately 200 board members from 80 Italian companies through interviews, surveys, and discussions with industry experts, Fondirigenti, Confindustria, Federmanager, and key members of business communities.

The expected results will translate into a significant and concrete improvement in the skills of board members. Additionally, the focus will be on conceiving new training models to strengthen and requalify managerial skills, bringing tangible benefits to both companies and the national system.
