3LoE and Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa for efficient resource utilization in production systems: the role of applied research in the company

Since January, the Master's program in Environmental Management and Control: management of transitions towards circular economy and decarbonization has begun at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. This program, now in its XXVIII edition, this year benefits from the collaboration of SFC Sistemi Formativi Confindustria and the European Center of Excellence for Green Skills "3LoE".

The collaboration between SFC and SSSA finds in the GECA Master's program a favorable environment to experiment with the methodology of applied research in a highly solicited sector such as efficient resource management in companies, involving young researchers and companies committed to innovating their production systems.

The European Center of Excellence for Green Skills "3LoE" aggregates over 20 partners from 7 European countries. Chambers of Commerce from Lithuania, Latvia, Germany, Austria, training institutions from Italy, Spain, Poland adhering to 3LoE have developed together services for companies for the green transition and training paths for updating professional profiles involved in resource and waste management and reuse in companies.

Wastewater management, energy efficiency systems, recovery and reuse of by-products to generate new resources: these are just some of the areas in which "3LoE" proposes specific professional paths in all the territories participating in the project, and where new paths of applied research in companies can be developed involving participants in the GECA Master's program.

Researchers guided by the SSSA staff, in collaboration with companies participating in the GECA program, will be able to develop paths of applied research and become professionals capable of addressing the environmental complexities of our time.

The course, divided into a 400-hour macromodule, focuses on the efficient management of major environmental resources, including materials such as waste, by-products, secondary raw materials, and biomaterials, as well as energy production and water resources. The second module aims to train managerial figures capable of defining strategies in the field of the circular economy, transmitting managerial skills to manage resources in a circular and efficient manner.

In addition to classroom lessons, the course includes field visits, action learning-based laboratories, and seminars. A 480-hour internship phase allows students to apply the knowledge acquired in real contexts and gain practical experience in the field.

In recent days, the usual on-site visits to facilities in contact with the School and the Master have taken place, giving students the opportunity to visit different companies specialized in efficient resource management. At Geofor, they learned about practices and technologies for the recovery and reuse of by-products. At Revet, they closely examined systems for wastewater management. With A.R.E.A., they understood the best practices for energy efficiency. The visit to Ersu allowed them to understand strategies to improve the sustainability of production processes. At Bulera, they explored innovative technologies to reduce the environmental impact of activities, while with Belvedere Peccioli, they analyzed policies to promote sustainability. Finally, the visit to Conceria Zabri offered students the opportunity to learn about the practices and technologies used in the tanning industry, with a focus on strategies to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability in the sector.
