From 3 to 5 June 2025, under the theme “Circular solutions for a competitive EU”, policymakers, businesses and environmental organisations explored the “three Cs” — Clean, Competitive & Circular — demonstrating how to integrate circularity into the heart of the European economy.
Although one week is not enough to grasp the full complexity of the cause-and-effect relationships between productivity and sustainability in the circular economy, Green Week served as a key catalyst for SMEs seeking to transform sustainability from a compliance burden into a competitive advantage.
The winners of the LIFE Awards 2025 reveal a fascinating insight: the principles of industrial symbiosis form the structural foundation of circular success, even when they are not explicitly recognised.
For example, among the LIFE projects that stood out this year, it is worth noting LIFE RE-ZIP, LIFEPOPWAT companies. The LIFEPOPWAT project plays a pivotal role in transforming contaminated water treatment into a clean water supply, facilitating industrial partnerships for resource exchange.
These projects reveal industrial symbiosis as the invisible architecture that makes circular economy initiatives possible: networks where one company's waste heat becomes energy for another, where materials flow seamlessly between processes, creating closed-loop systems that minimise waste and generate economic benefits.

The INSET - Erasmus+ project participated in by SFC Sistemi Formativi Confindustria, recognises this critical gap by placing industrial symbiosis at the heart of specialised training for policy makers, quality experts, and plan managers. Unlike initiatives where these principles remain implicit, INSET explicitly develops the skills to create and manage the interconnected relationships that make the transition to the circular economy possible.
