Metaverse and Digital skills for Education: what proposals to anticipate digital changes?

A new impulse towards experimentation and the use of digital innovations in adult education comes from the Politecnico di Milano and Iuav di Venezia, which are leading the way in projects supporting the new digital economy. From the field of fashion to cinema, from design to architecture. The two university poles have in fact launched new master courses for designers in the metaverse, a virtual reality shared via the Internet, where it is possible to test materials, virtual constructs and even experimental teaching methods.
Paola Pierotti's article published in Sole24ore on 1 September outlines the new programmes dedicated to an emerging model of a sustainable and self-sufficient economy, focusing on the development of skills such as digital techniques and circular innovations in architecture. For Professor Ingrid Paoletti of the Milan Polytechnic, the metaverse is an ideal space in which to test materials that in reality would take a long time and cost a lot of money. It is also an opportunity to bring together sustainability and digital issues, for example by testing the traceability of materials to raise user awareness of environmental impact and to steer towards more sustainable production and consumption models. The Master's degree in Digital Architecture at the Iuav University of Venice also uses the metaverse as an area for conceiving, managing and communicating projects.
Aligned with this innovative vision of conceiving the future world of education and work is the applied research action that SFC has launched, through discussions with European partners, aimed at anticipating the demand for digital skills of VET designers and teachers. From the analysis of the opportunities for digital development of work-based education systems, SFC promotes two initiatives within the Erasmus Plus programme:
- "Digital work-based learning" (2021-1-IT01-KA220-VET-000033241) of which SFC is the lead partner, focuses on how to transfer experience-based learning methodologies including work-based learning into the "virtual environment". Can virtual reality replace the workplace as a learning environment? Among the excellent partners in the partnership, the Dual Hole School and the University of Oberta collaborate in the project.
- "Digitronics" (2021-1-FR01-KA220-VET-000034822) led by MEDEF focused on how to stimulate the use of e-learning solutions to enhance the teaching and learning of mechatronics.
Together with the development of digital skills training programmes for VET trainers, SFC promotes among its members the use of the SELFIE (Self-reflection on Effective Learning by Fostering the use of Innovative Educational technologies) tool to raise awareness of digital skills among training providers and to share innovative pedagogical approaches and digital technologies in teaching, learning and assessment.
Based on the registrations collected, SFC will enable 7 trainers and training organisations to participate in the DIGITAL WBL and DIGITRONICS online training course.
